SmartLipo
SmartLipo in Sacramento
Smartlipo is a laser liposuction system that was innovated as a new approach to fat removal. The Nd:YAG laser with a 1064nm wavelength is used to target the fat cells by heating and destroying the fat tissue prior to removal.
In addition to liquidating fat, the approach promotes tissue coagulation which, in turn, tightens loose skin. Treatment with SmartLipo is known to cause minimal bleeding and bruising, and results in a shorter recovery period, benefits that many regard as major improvements over traditional liposuction.
When to Choose SmartLipo
If you are bothered by stubborn, localized fat deposits on your abdomen, back, chest, upper arms, face, thighs, waist, hips, and so on, that are resistant to diet and exercise, you may want to consider SmartLipo. Good candidates for treatment demonstrate sound health and maintain a stable weight.
Smartlipo is excellent for treating areas such as:
- Upper arms
- Hips
- Thighs
- Waist
- Knees
- Tummy
- Buttocks/back
- Chin/neck
What to Expect During Your SmartLipo Procedure
First, the area to be treated is numbed with an anesthetic, the same solution used in tumescent liposuction. Next, a small cannula with a laser probe inside is inserted into the skin into the fat deposits. The surgeon moves the laser probe in fanning motion as the laser breaks down the fat cells. The liquefied fat is then suctioned out.
If the Smartlipo MPX™ is part of your treatment plan, a second laser is then used to address the underlying tissue to stimulate collagen and contribute to the tightening of the skin.

Recovery and Results
Recovery is generally uncomplicated following treatment with SmartLipo. The compression garment provided by Dr. McMenamin should be worn for up to six weeks in order to reduce swelling, prevent scar tissue and ensure a smooth result. For many individuals, only one SmartLipo treatment is needed to achieve the desired appearance improvements. Most patients resume work within three to four days and activities such as exercise within two weeks.
The first results of the procedure are visible within one week, and will continue to improve over the next three to four months.
Risks of SmartLipo include infection, bleeding, scarring, skin contour irregularities, asymmetry, seromas, and hematomas. During a consultation at our Sacramento cosmetic surgery practice, you can discuss the likelihood of liposuction complications with the doctor.
