Restylane
Restylane® is a family of injectable cosmetic treatments including Restylane®, Restylane-L®, Perlane®, and Perlane-L®. These treatments are used to treat lines around the mouth, like nasolabial folds and lipstick lines.
When to Choose Restylane®
Restylane products are used on the face, around the mouth, to reduce the appearance of lines and wrinkles.
Restylane products are injectable gels made from hyaluronic acid. These gels are used to temporarily correct facial wrinkles and folds, including:
- Smile lines,
- Marionette lines,
- Lipstick lines above the lips
- Lines at the creases of the mouth
Hyaluronic acid is naturally found in your body and connective tissue. When injected beneath the skin, Restylane and Perlane gel injections add fullness under the skin to restore tissue volume. The substance lasts until it is gradually broken down and absorbed by your body.

The particles of Restylane are small, and the injections can be closer to the surface of the skin. The particles of Perlane are larger and designed to be injected into deeper tissue. For enhanced patient comfort, Restylane-L and Perlane-L include Lidocaine.
Restylane and Perlane are not for women who are nursing or pregnant. They are also not recommended for people who have bleeding disorders, acne and sores on their faces, and a reaction to gram-positive bacteria. Restylane-L and Perlane-L should not be used by those allergic to Lidocaine.
What to Expect During Restylane Treatment
Before the treatment, Dr. McMenamin will clean and prepare your face for the injection. He will determine the best location for your injection, marking the specific points that will correct the targeted line or wrinkle. A topical anesthetic may be used, often in combination with lidocaine contained in Restylane. You will get a series of injections to place the gel beneath the skin of the targeted area.
Recovery And Results
After your Restylane® injections, you can experience redness, swelling, bruising and tenderness. These last less than one week. You will need to ice the treated area to reduce swelling.
Restylane results are temporary, but you will see results right away. Many patients have results that last for six months if they receive only one treatment with Restylane. Results can last a year and a half if one additional, follow up treatment is done after four and a half or nine months.
