Liquid Silicone

Many injectable treatments have temporary results. Liquid silicone produces permanent results because it is never broken down by the body. This product is not specifically FDA approved for cosmetic treatments, but it is not legally prohibited to use liquid silicone off label.

In select cases, Dr. McMenamin may recommend liquid silicone as an injectable treatment for cosmetic purposes. This treatment would only be performed after a consultation to determine your suitability for liquid silicone injection.

When To Choose Liquid Silicone

When considering liquid silicone injections, it is important to remember that:

  • liquid silicone treatments are permanent,
  • liquid silicone will never be broken down by the body, and
  • a proper microdroplet injection technique must be used to achieve good results.

Liquid silicone is excellent at plumping the lips for a more youthful appearance. The injections work because they cause your body to create collagen in response to the treatment.

If too much liquid silicone is injected, or a poor technique is used, lumps can form. In order to prevent lumps, doctors inject a very small amount of oil at a time. This is called the microdroplet technique.

If you choose to get injections of liquid silicone, it is extremely important that you select a doctor like Dr. McMenamin, who has with experience in the proper microdroplet technique that is critical to achieving pleasing results.

Liquid silicone treatments are not for people who desire a temporary treatment whose effects will fade. Other injectable fillers will fade over time. If you are pleased with the results of temporary injectable treatments, you can schedule repeat treatments to maintain your results. If you are unhappy with the results of temporary treatments, you can wait until the effects of the treatment have worn off. Liquid silicone will not wear off.

For this reason, liquid silicone treatments should be performed slowly, over time.

What To Expect During Liquid Silicone Treatments

If you choose liquid silicone injection, you should expect to get a series of very small treatments over an extended period of time. At each appointment, you will get a very small amount of liquid silicone injected. Your results will be evaluated at a follow-up appointment after all swelling has gone down, before any additional injections will be made.

Recovery And Results

Following liquid silicone injections, you experience some bruising, redness, and swelling at the site of the injections. You may be advised to indirectly ice the area of the injection after the injections. This swelling will fade over the next two weeks and the result of your injections will be revealed.
