When to Choose Laser Treatment
Both men and women of any age can benefit from laser treatment, particularly those who experience skin conditions or aging skin issues such as uneven pigmentation, melasma, age spots, redness, broken capillaries, rosacea, acne, scarring, skin laxity, wrinkles, fine lines and crepey skin.
What to Expect During Your Laser Treatment
Laser treatments usually don’t require much pre-procedure preparation, however, Dr. McMenamin may recommend using certain skin care products in the weeks leading up to your laser treatment to optimize results. Additionally, if you’re prone to cold sores, Dr. McMenamin will prescribe an oral anti-viral medication before your procedure. Anesthesia is usually unnecessary with most laser procedures, however, topical numbing cream and a mild sedative may be recommended to patients undergoing more aggressive treatments.
Dr. McMenamin performs laser treatments using Sciton lasers, such as the BBL, SkinTyte or ProFractional lasers. Depending on your skin type and cosmetic concerns, Dr. McMenamin will choose the best laser device for you and then pass the beam of laser light over the desired area. Some patients have their entire face, neck and chest treated, while others choose to have just a portion of their face treated, such as around the eyes or mouth. Lasers can also be used for hand rejuvenation.
Recovery and Results
Superficial laser treatments usually don’t require any downtime, and patients experience only mild redness for a few days after treatment. When deeper layers of skin are treated, the recovery period may last up to a couple of weeks wherein patients experience more intense redness and skin peeling. The upside to a longer laser treatment recovery period is that results are usually more dramatic and fewer treatments are needed to achieve smoother, younger-looking skin.
