Laser liposuction is a body contouring treatment in which a laser assists in the fat removal process of liposuction. Laser energy is applied to areas of the body marked by fat deposits in an effort to remove fat and tighten skin tissue.
Examples of laser liposuction technology include products like SmartLipo, SlimLipo and ProLipo. Laser liposuction tends to reduce pain, blood loss and bruising when compared to liposuction alone. Furthermore, the technique allows for a more selective fat removal with the side benefit of increased tissue tightening.
When to Choose Laser Liposuction
If you are tired of the fat deposits in your outer thighs, abdomen, buttock, hips, arms, breasts or neck, laser lipo may be right for you. As with all cosmetic surgeries, it is also important that individuals seeking laser liposuction are healthy non-smokers who are motivated to improve their appearance. The best results from liposuction come when you initiate healthy lifestyle changes, with a balanced diet and regular exercise regimen.

Laser liposuction works best for those patients that are within a normal weight range and need a smaller area reduction. Laser skin tightening works very well on those patients who need extra skin tightening but do not wish to have surgical skin removal. Tumescent liposuction works best on those patients with a need for a larger area of fat reduction or are at the upper levels or above a normal weight range.
Relative contraindications for laser lipo include uncontrolled diabetes, some blood disorders, kidney problems, and some skin disorders. Please consult with a qualified cosmetic surgeon like Dr. Patrick McMenamin to determine if laser liposuction is right for you.
What to Expect During Your Laser Liposuction Treatment
Laser liposuction is conducted as an outpatient procedure that lasts approximately one hour. Your surgeon will mark the areas to be targeted with the laser and then inject local anesthesia so that treatment is as comfortable as possible. The patient and their treatment team will wear laser safety goggles in order to protect the eyes.
Once these steps are completed, small incisions are made to allow access to the treatment areas. The laser probe is then inserted into the target areas, and the laser is directed toward the fat to initiate a breakdown of these cells. The liquefied fat and dislodged tissue is then suctioned out. When laser heat is applied to a specific temperature to the undersurface of skin, skin tightening commences.
Dr. McMenamin can apply laser lipo to multiple areas of the body, including the:
- Neck and Face
- Chest
- Thighs
- Abdomen
- Buttocks
- Triceps
Recovery and Results
Most patients are back to their normal routine within a few days following laser liposuction treatment. In the meantime, minor bruising, numbness, and mild discomfort may occur. Specific risks of laser liposuction vary depending on the extent of your treatment. During your consultation, Dr. McMenamin can explain the risks and possible complications that are involved. Compression garments must be worn post operatively.
