Broad Band Light

Broadband light (BBL) is a popular, non-invasive skin therapy similar to intense pulsed light (IPL) that gently corrects ruddy, blotchy skin on the face, neck, chest and hands.

When to Choose Broadband Light Therapy

Broadband light can be delivered at several different wavelengths to create customized treatments for nearly any skin issue associated with hyperpigmentation, flushing or redness. It is often recommended to adults and sometimes teens who experience any of the following skin conditions:

  • Birthmarks and lesions
  • Acne
  • Rosacea
  • Enlarged pores
  • Sun damage
  • Melasma
  • Freckles
  • Age spots
  • Broken capillaries

Broadband light therapy also offers superior permanent hair reduction results, so patients who have unwanted hair on their face or body often choose this procedure, as well. BBL hair removal is commonly sought by patients who want to get rid of thick, unruly or misplaced hair on the upper lip, sideburns, chin, legs, bikini area, back, chest and underarms.

What to Expect During Broadband Light Therapy

Before your broadband light therapy begins, Dr. McMenamin will thoroughly evaluate your skin and talk with you about your cosmetic concerns. Your face will be cleansed, and you will be fitted with eye protection to wear throughout your treatment.

Dr. McMenamin will then customize the settings on the broadband light handpiece to deliver just the right amount of laser energy to correct your skin issues and help you achieve your goals. The broadband light will be passed over the desired treatment area(s) as a built-in cooling fan keeps you comfortable and minimizes discomfort. Depending on the size of the treatment area, broadband light treatment typically takes only 30-60 minutes.

Recovery and Results

Broadband light is so gentle, you won’t need any time off work or away from your normal daily routine after the procedure. Mild redness and darkening of hyperpigmentation may result immediately following broadband light treatment, but these are temporary side effects that resolve within a day or two. Within one week, your dark spots flake away and red skin is soothed to reveal a more even, toned complexion.

Depending on your needs and cosmetic goals, Dr. McMenamin will typically recommend anywhere from three to six broadband light treatments to achieve the best possible result.
