Breast Augmentation Surgery
Improving Your Appearance
Cosmetic breast
augmentation has been very popular in the United States, particularly in the
past 10 years. Women enjoy the outward improvement in their appearance and the
inward feeling of improved self-confidence and femininity.
There has been
much controversy regarding the safety of breast implants,
particularly those filled with silicone gel. To date, scientific studies have
not supported a connection between disease processes and breast implants.
However, there are risks and possible complications associated with the
procedure that all patients should be aware of.
If you are
thinking about having breast implants, you need to know as much about them as
possible. Hundreds of thousands of women already have them. The following
information is based on their experiences.
-
Implants available for use today are fabricated from a silicone circular or
oval envelope filled with saline (salt water) or silicone gel. The use of silicone gel
implants was restricted by the Federal Drug Administration (FDA) in 1991.
However, a new "cohesive gel" silicone implant is now available for general use.
Implants
will continue to be studied
for safety.
-
Breast
implants do not last forever. The exact life span of the implants varies
widely from woman to woman. They may last many years in some women and have
to be replaced more frequently in others. Implants are expected
to deflate eventually and may have a life span of only five to ten years or
less though they may last longer. You should expect to require further surgery to
repair, replace, or remove them in the future.
-
Breast
implant surgery has the usual risks of surgery. There is a risk of
infection, unsightly scarring, temporary or permanent numbness, and possible
complications from anesthesia. Your surgeon will discuss the surgical risks
in detail with you.
-
The surgery
is done under local anesthesia with sedation. You will be groggy most of the
day following surgery and have some level of soreness for the weeks to
follow. It is normal to have discomfort, swelling, bruising, and numbness
after surgery. It is also normal to feel exhausted. Most women are able to
return to normal activities within 2-3 weeks. It is recommended that you wear a
good support bra during the day and an athletic sport bra
during the night for at least the first year following surgery.
-
There are
four approaches currently used to place implants. They are as follows:
| Inframammary |
The incision is hidden in the natural
fold beneath the breast.
|
| Periareolar |
The incision is made at the edge
of the areola (the pigmented area around the nipple.)
|
| Transaxillary
|
The incision is made in the
underarm area.
|
| Periumbilical |
The incision is made in the navel area.
Implants may be placed above or below the muscle. Saline implants
only.
